What are lactic acid bacteria?

Lactic acid bacteria are live microorganisms, mainly from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium – the same groups of bacteria found in fermented foods such as kefir, yoghurt and sauerkraut. In food supplements, their quantity is given in colony-forming units (CFU) per daily dose.

How to choose

Look at three things: how many billion bacteria are in the daily dose, how many different strains the product contains, and whether the format suits you. The range includes 2 billion, 5 billion and 10 billion bacteria per capsule, as well as bifidobacteria with glutamine and, in powder form, lactic acid bacteria with oat fibre and glutamine. Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast rather than a bacterium.

Enzymes

Digestive enzymes are proteins that break down the proteins, fats and carbohydrates in food. The range includes the multi-enzyme Enzyme and bromelain from pineapple. Enzymes are usually taken during a meal, and lactic acid bacteria with food or just before.

Storage

Keep the jar in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and close the lid tightly after use – moisture and heat reduce the number of live bacteria.
