What does selenium do in the body?

According to the health claims authorised in the European Union, selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to normal thyroid function, to the maintenance of normal hair and nails, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and to normal spermatogenesis. The reference intake for adults is 55 µg per day.

Why is selenium a talking point in the Nordic countries?

The amount of selenium in food depends on how much selenium there is in the soil, and the soils of Northern Europe are low in selenium. Good sources include fish, seafood, eggs and Brazil nuts.

How to take it

Selenium 100 µg – take with food and follow the dose stated on the package. Do not take more selenium than the package recommends: the safe upper limit for adults is 255 µg per day from all sources combined. Selenium can be taken together with zinc.
