Healthy habits, part 1: Water
During the summer heat, it was easy to remember to drink enough to maintain fluid balance, but now as days get shorter, drinking tends to be forgotten.
Why is water so important?
The human body consists of about 60% water. Water is essential for virtually every bodily function – from regulating body temperature to transporting nutrients and removing waste products.
How much should you drink?
The general recommendation is approximately 2 litres per day, but the exact need depends on body weight, physical activity and climate. A simple rule: if your urine is light yellow, you are likely well hydrated.
Tips for drinking more water
- Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day
- Set reminders on your phone
- Add flavour with lemon, cucumber or mint
- Drink a glass of water with every meal
- Start your morning with a glass of water
