About Vitamin D Consciously: Why, When and How to Choose the Right Supplement?
Living in Estonia, we are used to the fact that from autumn to spring, the sun becomes an increasingly rare visitor. Although it may seem that this only affects our mood, the impact is actually much deeper – it is precisely the lack of sunlight that is the main reason why many of us develop vitamin D deficiency.
But why is vitamin D so important and how to find the most suitable supplement among many? Let’s examine this more closely.
What is vitamin D and what is it needed for?
Vitamin D is not just a vitamin, but also a hormonally active compound that has multiple functions in the body. It is best known as a regulator of bone and calcium metabolism, but its effects actually extend much further:
-
Contributes to the normal function of the immune system
-
Supports muscle function and nervous system function
-
Has a role in the process of cell division
-
Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
Contemporary research also associates vitamin D levels with mood, cardiovascular system and metabolism, but additional studies are needed to confirm these connections.
How does vitamin D deficiency develop?
The body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun’s UVB radiation. But at our latitudes, especially from October to March, sunlight is too weak to synthesize sufficient vitamin D.
Risk groups for vitamin D deficiency include:
-
Elderly people
-
Young children
-
People with dark skin tone
-
Sedentary people or those staying indoors
-
Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers
To assess vitamin D levels, it is possible to do a blood test measuring 25(OH)D levels. Values above 75 nmol/l are considered optimal, but in Estonia, many people’s levels fall below this.
Which vitamin D supplement to choose?
🧠 Choose the right dose – less may not be more
-
20–50 µg per day is suitable for general strengthening use and preventing moderate deficiency
-
100 µg per day may be appropriate for greater need or confirmed deficiency (e.g. based on blood test), but should be used consciously
🌿 Animal or plant-based?
Traditionally, vitamin D₃ has been obtained from sheep’s wool (lanolin), but vegan-friendly vitamin D₃ is made from lichen (lichen extract). These are 100% plant-based and proven effective.

Vitamin D is much more than a ‘sunshine vitamin’ – it is important for daily health support, especially in Nordic climate conditions. When choosing the right product, it’s worth considering your lifestyle, diet and needs. If necessary, consult a doctor or pharmacist and remember that a food supplement does not replace a varied diet and healthy lifestyle.
