Beat iron deficiency
Iron is an essential trace element that must be obtained in sufficient amounts from food. Iron participates in many body functions – oxygen transport, energy production and immune system function.
Symptoms of iron deficiency
Iron deficiency is the world’s most common nutritional deficiency. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, pallor, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and increased sensitivity to cold. Women, children, athletes and vegetarians are especially at risk.
Sources of iron in food
Iron occurs in food in two forms – heme iron and non-heme iron. Heme iron is found in meat and fish and is better absorbed. Non-heme iron is found in plant foods such as legumes, whole grains, spinach and nuts.
How to improve iron absorption?
- Vitamin C promotes iron absorption – eat iron-rich foods together with vitamin C-rich foods
- Avoid consuming coffee, tea and milk with iron supplements, as these reduce absorption
- Iron supplements are best taken on an empty stomach for better absorption
