Essential oils ABC, part 1
Using essential oils is a beautiful way to bring freshness, pampering and well-being into everyday life. In this three-part article series, we share everything you need to know about essential oils.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from various parts of plants – flowers, leaves, bark, roots and fruit peels. They are obtained through steam distillation, cold pressing or solvent extraction.
How do essential oils work?
Essential oils work through two main channels: scent and skin absorption. When inhaled, aromatic molecules reach the brain’s limbic system, which controls emotions, memory and mood. Through skin, the active compounds of essential oils can reach the bloodstream.
Basic safety rules
- Never apply undiluted to skin – always mix with a carrier oil (e.g. coconut, almond or jojoba oil)
- Perform a skin test before first use – apply a diluted drop to the inner arm
- Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes
- Store in a dark, cool place in sealed bottles
- Consult a specialist during pregnancy and for children
